Apple updates its iPhone lineup with new models every year. And this year should be no different. The newest iPhone 16 models will bring some new changes to the already existing iPhone 15 models. We expect to see some performance improvements, design changes, and new features added to the iPhone 16.
Design Changes
The newest iPhone 16 models will see a slight change in design from the standard models. Apple is pushing for spatial video recording in all the new iPhone models. The previous standard models had a diagonal camera design which meant that taking spatial videos in landscape mode wasn’t possible.
To accommodate this, Apple will use a vertical layout for the cameras similar to the cameras in iPhone X and 11/12 models. The newer leaked renders show a design that mixes up the design of iPhone X and 11 models.
The pill-shaped bump will house the Ultrawide and Wide lenses. The mic will be in the bump whereas the flash will be next to the bump.
What’s more, Apple also plans to add the action button from the iPhone 15 Pro models to the base iPhone 16 models, which will replace the mute switch. The right side of the iPhone will feature a new capture button, which will be new for the base and the pro models.
Aside from these changes, there won’t be a lot of major changes to the design of the iPhone 16.
New Colors
Although there are numerous rumors about the color of the new iPhones, there aren’t a lot of concrete leaks about the colors of the new iPhone 16 models.
For the base iPhone 16 variants, the rumored colors include white, black, purple, pink, yellow, blue, and green. Ming-Chi Kuo, an Apple analyst, confirms the rumor but believes that purple and yellow won’t be available. They will likely use the color-infused back glass used in the base iPhone 15 models.
Apple might replace the Blue Titanium color option in the iPhone 15 Pro with a Rose Titanium color.
The iPhone 16 Pro models might also have a different finish on the sides compared to the iPhone 15 Pros. This time, we might get a glossy finish of the frame, instead of the brushed finish, like the 15 Pro.
Eliminating Overheating
Overheating has always been a major problem in iPhones, but it has been a huge problem with the iPhone 15 Pro models, especially during gaming. This is something I’ve experienced a lot, no matter which iOS 17 version I’m on.
Reports suggest that Apple will be improving the batteries by increasing the density of the cells, which will also help control the temperature. Apple may also use a stainless steel case which will also improve the conductivity. This was also indicated in a patent filed by Apple.
As someone who plays a lot of Call of Duty Mobile, this might finally be the change I need to let go of the annoying-to-use cooler, which I had to stick on for every gaming session. And with the addition of USB-C hub to connect my iPhone to TV and my Xfinity internet router with Wi-Fi for a stable connection, I can finally live out the dream of true console-level gaming on iPhone.
Larger Sizes
iPhone screen sizes have remained relatively the same throughout the years, but this can change with the introduction of the new iPhone models this year. The iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max models are expected to get bigger screens according to multiple reports.
Currently, the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max are 6.1 and 6.7 inches and the iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max are expected to be around 6.3 and 6.9 inches respectively. The size difference isn’t too much but this means that the already-bulky 15 Pro Max will become even more bulky.
Apple hasn’t updated the screen size of the iPhone models since 2020, so we are due for a screen size refresh of the screens.
Talking about screen sizes, Apple is also set to use true bezel-less screens in the newer iPhone 16 Pro models which means that the larger display sizes, with the true bezel-less screens, will make a truly amazing screen experience.
Improved Cameras
The iPhone 16 Pro models might have a 48-megapixel Ultra Wide lens, whereas it was only limited to the Wide lens. This will allow for sharper images and better images in lowlight conditions. With a 49-megapixel lens, the cameras can also use pixel-binning technology to combine the data from four pixels into one pixel for the best image quality.
Both iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max could be getting the 5x Telephoto lens this time around, rather than the tech being reserved for the bigger Pro Max models.
The 16 Pro Max model could have a periscope camera for an increased optical zoom. However, this is only a rumor from one source and there isn’t a lot more information on it so take this with a grain of salt.
Wrapping Up
Although there are a lot of changes coming to the newer iPhone models, to a general user, these updates to the iPhone won’t justify an upgrade. Still, let’s wait and see what Apple has in store for iPhone users in 2024.
