  • Carrots, celery, raw vegetables…..cut them into small pieces and chew them with your back teeth
  • Dabur bread, pizza crust…. eat it in small bites
  • Always remember to wear a mouthguard if you are playing sports.

  • Visit your family dentist
  • Soft drinks can completely ruin your orthodontic treatment

Finally, your braces are off and your smile is beautiful, straight and healthy. Your orthodontic journey is not yet complete. To make your smile look its best, you’ll need to wear retainers to protect and stabilize your results. Retainers control the change in the position of the teeth.    They are utilized after orthodontic treatment to keep up with the right arrangement of the teeth until the encompassing gums, bone and muscle acclimate to the new place of your teeth.

Do I need orthodontic care?

And braces are often an important step to achieving a beautiful and healthy smile. The primary goal of orthodontics is to protect your oral function, speech, teeth from trauma, enhance your appearance, and preserve dental health.

And orthodontic treatment focuses on correcting the malposition of the gums above and below the upper teeth, called malocclusion. Ignoring malocclusion can increase your dental trauma, gum disease, and speech difficulties.

If you have misaligned teeth, experience pain or discomfort related to gums, are struggling with effective dental hygiene, or have problems with facial speech, then Orthodontic Care is strongly recommended. At Stellar Orthodontic, our experienced orthodontist, will provide an excellent insight and personal guide that will address your needs.

Types of retainers

Retainers can be custom made or they can be removable and fixed.

Conventional removable retainers or hawley returners

It usually involves a metal wire that goes around your front teeth and is attached to acrylic that sits on the roof of your mouth.

These metal wires can be adjusted as needed until the treatment is finished or to keep the front teeth moving less.

Aligner-style retainers or Essix retainers

Look for clear aligners and provide a more visually appealing alternative to wire retainers. This clear retainer can fit over the entire dental arch or just canine to canine. It is created from a mold of your newly aligned teeth.

Fixed retainers

It consists of wires that are bound behind your lower and upper teeth. As the device is usually not needed for more than a year after wisdom teeth, they are often kept in place for life.

Advantages and disadvantages

  • Retainers can be removed for eating or hygiene routines
  • The removable retainer can get lost easily so remember to keep it in your case whenever you take it off to eat or brush.
  • A fixed retainer is perfect if you don’t want to keep track or worry about how many hours a day you have to wear it.
  • Teeth with fixed retainers require more attention during flossing to remove play cues.   Patients with fixed retainers often use threads to pass dental floss through the small space between the retainer and the teeth.
